Welcome to Bywood Elementary School!

Bywood Elementary School’s mission is to serve the students through Upper Darby School District’s vision of creating excellence through deliberate instruction. Bywood is a multi-ethnic community where parents, students, staff and the principal work collaboratively and purposefully to create an academically rigorous, safe, respectful environment conducive to learning.

Bywood, a neighborhood school, is located in Upper Darby, near the 69th Street shopping district. Our motto, "A World of Understanding," exemplifies this special and unique elementary school. Bywood serves a population of approximately 640 students that is noted for its diversity. Ethnic backgrounds include native born and twenty other nationalities. Students from Bywood come from homes in which 29 languages and dialects are spoken. Mutual respect and appreciation are the keystones of Bywood’s success in dealing with this diversity. Our staff and students utilize a Responsive Classroom approach to both the social and academic curriculum. Bywood Elementary School is an elementary school like no other and a proud past recipient of the prestigious National School of Excellence Award!

Bywood creates a climate that fosters literacy through a wide range of reading, writing, speaking, and listening experiences for information and for pleasure. Our goal is to instill in our students the habits of mind that characterize a self-reliant thinker, reader, and learner. We strive to develop positive concepts, foster respect for individual differences, and nurture a supportive school climate. Bywood is a school community in which the administration, staff, and parents collaborate to create a safe learning environment with high expectations for the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development of its students. Bywood Elementary focuses on meeting the individual needs of each student through academic and supporting programs that include language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, technology, art, music, and physical education. We also offer acceleration, enrichment, and tutorial programs, along with educational field trips to supplement classroom learning. In addition, Bywood host before and after school programs, band and chorus, parent involvement programs, and community service programs.

An active Home and School Association supports the curricular and extracurricular endeavors at Bywood through library and reading programs, fund raising events, family fun nights, and more. Opportunity for additional parental involvement comes through a series of parent workshops, focusing on academic skills and citizenship, offered throughout the school year. Our supportive parents, caring faculty, and talented students make Bywood Elementary a special “world” created to help students grow.
